We fALL Down bUT We gET Up

I took a detour from our "trip" this weekend, but with a little guidance found my way back to the main drag...

PLAN is something that I neglected to do this weekend. I have 3 "play" daughters all of whom attend graduate school with me at Iowa. One of my daughters got married this weekend in Tallahassee, Florida. Food, Fun, & Fellowship describes my weekend. Ribs, German chocolate cake, stewed corn, greens...just reflecting back on this weekend gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

But today is Monday!!! A new day full of new beginnings!!! No one said this would be easy - the key is to NEVER GIVE UP! DON'T QUIT.

We do fall sometimes, but don't stay down. Get up and try, try, again. In Rudyard Kippling's poem "If," he says, "...If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster, And treat those two impostors just the same...;" I was on the mark during the first week, but had a set back over the weekend. I will not let my set back deter me from my travel itinerary. Remember, we're on a 12 week trip together. Start your engines...

We were out teaching the kids to ride two wheelers yesterday. Each time they fell I would look at them and it was if they knew I was going to say "it's ok - you just got to try again".

I actually thought about all of us. Because Kathleen had written in one of her past blogs about trying not look to our past failures. I am looking forward just as all of you- after a 1,000 failed attempts in my past. I taking the word fail out of the vocab. And just going to try again! Get back on the bike literally and try again.

One more thing - a past nutritionist friend had told me. When I would mess up eating wise I tended to "BLOW" the whole day and think I will start tomorrow. She had said, "If you had a pull in a sweater you wouldn't keep pulling it until the whole sweater was a pile of yarn, would you?" I thought NO - I would tuck that little piece back into the sweater and act as if nothing happened.

Good luck Vernita! Know WE are all in this with you! And we are all "falling" and getting back on!~ So proud of you! ~Kara

Weekends are tough on their own and when you add a celebration to it..., well I empathize. Been there done that. But you have the right attitude get right back on the program. Surprisingly you may find that on future celebrations your resolve is better and you will do less damage. I said less not none. Whatever don't beat yourself up over it just get to moving.

That's the attitude girl! Keep the
engine (our body) running. When we are
tempted by food, pick and Choose what's
nutritious and small portions.
I am still walking. Thank's to you.

Hi Vernita!

Thank you so much for being an inspiration and a blessing to all of us. I just joined C2M this morning. I have tried time and time again to lose weight without success. My usual saying in the past has been “I’m watching my weight and I’ve got it out there where I can see it” and “It takes work to have all this fabulousness going on”! Today that’s over. I chose to move with you because I can tell you like myself have a positive attitude and “we love ourselves fiercely even though we need to “whittle our middle” we look good! I love cookies and pie  this time I am going to work harder on myself. I purchased a dress that would scream if I tried to put it on today but by my birthday in August “I will wear it! I will encourage you and everyone else who has taken this challenge to improve our health. We are on the road to be fine as wine! “You go girl” I’m 5’9 with 50 pounds to lose.

Steph

Hello Stephanie,
Congratulations on deciding to welcome "Healthy" back into your life.
Make small achievable goals and celebrate your successes along the way. Not the celebrations we were acquainted with in the past (i.e. going out to eat) - but the new ones (i.e. going for a walk around a beautiful lake, volunteering at a jazz and arts festival, etc.).
Creativity is the key and you have found the correct combination.
~Vernita

Vernita, I swear these links off your newest post are making my day! I've enjoyed my couple weeks with too many slips, but I'm back on now. I actually went to the Korean market and picked up some new and interesting veggies. While I'm certainly not bored with what I've been cooking, new tastes feel like a treat.

Choose To Move: A Community, A Way of Life

At the end of any journey, it’s always nice to reflect on the experience and enjoy the exhilaration that comes with accomplishment. During the past 12 weeks, seven real women have opened their hearts and minds to women across the country. They’ve revealed struggles, shared empowering messages, offered valuable tips and served as genuine advocates for this program.

During the Choose To Move challenge, these women not only engaged in physical activity, they discovered a community of women who share a common goal – increase physical activity in order to develop a healthier lifestyle. Their success is a direct result of determination, commitment and the support they received from those in the Choose To Move community.

From a mom with three kids to a full-time college student to women in the workplace, our real women take on many important roles. And as women juggling multiple responsibilities, we want to be the best we can be - a common thread among women in America. However, in order to be the best for our families, we must do what’s best for ourselves. Our seven real women did exactly that! Each woman, in her own way, learned how to make time for physical activity and develop better eating habits!

For Ruann, Kara, Lisa, Melanie, Vernita, Kathleen and Zulema, the 12-week challenge has come to an end. However, the ultimate reality is that their life-long journey to maintain a healthy lifestyle has only begun. No matter where you are in this journey, I encourage you to rely on women in the Choose To Move community, as well as those around you. Take advantage of the Choose To Move program and turn this challenge into a way of life.

Dr. Mieres,

I'm very much an internet girl. As soon as I found out I had high blood pressure, I found this site. After going through all the 'choose to move' selectees, I chose Vervita, for the reason that she update often and replied to those that posted comments.

Well here we are, 6 months later, most of those chosen have yet to update.

Considering these are all busy and accomplished women, perhaps some slack should be cut. Ok.

The forums are worse. I have had to hunt and peck to find true posts, some of which should be answered by a professional, not a jr. high social studies teacher.

I'm sorry to be so negative. In truth, AHA diet and recipes have made it possible that I may be coming off meds next week. My diet plan has been based on your cookbooks.

When I called in my numbers today, to get a refill, the office called me back and said the doctor said when I want, to stop meds for 4 days and make an appointment for the 5th. If bp is in the 100-120 range, we'll stop the meds. Woo hoo! Diet and exercise may pay off!
