Go Red for Women

Go Red for Women

It has become my staple attire when I am running around town spreading the word that HEART DISEASE IS THE NUMBER ONE KILLER OF WOMEN! Not only that but it has killed MORE women than men EVERY year since 1984. Scary Stuff! Certainly this is not a man's disease! You can tell I am in my up on my soap box mode. I am all fired up about heart month.

We went to a minor league ice hockey game with the kids on saturday night and it was pink in the rink night (literally they were skating on pink ice) in support of breast cancer. Even the players had special pink jerseys with the pink ribbon just for this game. My six year old daughter who had just had me tell my open heart surgery story to her class the day before turns and whispers in my ear - "mommy, why can't they be wearing red?" I almost cried. My sweet little kids are even mini-crusaders for the cause.
My wish is that one day people will be as aware and committed to fighting cardiovascular disease in women, which kills 1 in 2.5 women, as they are today in the fight against breast cancer.
Okay, back to what is up with me these days. I am still getting the Y as much as I can which some weeks is 5 days, some 6 and then some only 3. I have signed up for another 5k GOD HELP ME! Last time I was worried about finishing now I am worried about doing slightly better than I did last time. I am headed to DC this week to speak to a group of Business Professional Women and share with them all the fabulousness (is that a word?) of Choose to Move. I am bringing Gabby my oldest with me. We are very excited about getting in some good walks while we see our nations capitol. I hope to have some great shots to share with you all.
You can tell I have missed writing because this may be my longest blog yet. Well, I am glad to be back and hope all you movers are still moving!!!! Happy Heart Month! Don't forget to visit www.goredforwomen.org this month

Hello "Crimson Red" Kara!

You look great in your Go Red For Women attire.

Keep spreading the word about heart disease and living heart-healthy...you'll do just fine in D.C. I know that it must be refreshing to see the fruit of your labor speaking up on behalf of her Mom.

Wow I am impressed!! you really got me thinking.

Hey Kara,

I am new to the movement but I am very excited. I come from a family with a poor heart health history on both my father and mother side. Now at age 35 and overweight, I am concerned about being the best me I can be both inside and out. Your story inspires me and it sounds very familiar with the exception of the surgery. Please stay encourgaed and keep moving. GO RED!!!!!

Choose To Move: A Community, A Way of Life

At the end of any journey, it’s always nice to reflect on the experience and enjoy the exhilaration that comes with accomplishment. During the past 12 weeks, seven real women have opened their hearts and minds to women across the country. They’ve revealed struggles, shared empowering messages, offered valuable tips and served as genuine advocates for this program.

During the Choose To Move challenge, these women not only engaged in physical activity, they discovered a community of women who share a common goal – increase physical activity in order to develop a healthier lifestyle. Their success is a direct result of determination, commitment and the support they received from those in the Choose To Move community.

From a mom with three kids to a full-time college student to women in the workplace, our real women take on many important roles. And as women juggling multiple responsibilities, we want to be the best we can be - a common thread among women in America. However, in order to be the best for our families, we must do what’s best for ourselves. Our seven real women did exactly that! Each woman, in her own way, learned how to make time for physical activity and develop better eating habits!

For Ruann, Kara, Lisa, Melanie, Vernita, Kathleen and Zulema, the 12-week challenge has come to an end. However, the ultimate reality is that their life-long journey to maintain a healthy lifestyle has only begun. No matter where you are in this journey, I encourage you to rely on women in the Choose To Move community, as well as those around you. Take advantage of the Choose To Move program and turn this challenge into a way of life.

Dear Dr. Mieres:

About the only time I can find to walk is during my lunch break. Is it better to eat prior to or following a vigerous walk?

Thank you,
Ruth

Dr. Mieres,

I saw you on TV several months ago and while the face has changed some, the name surely was very familiar. I finally found out that you are a native of Trinidad and just wanted to tell you how proud I am of you and the great job you are doing.

I believe we attended the same high school in Curepe, Trinidad, SAGHS.

Keep up the good work.
